Cairns is a modern and vibrant city and the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, Port Douglas and the Daintree Rainforest. Cairns is an ideal base to explore the wonderful attractions Tropical North Queensland has to offer.

Dating back to 1876 Cairns sprung up out of coastal mudflats. Nowadays, the city draws a markedly younger crowd partying in its bars and clubs. We see the city as more of a starting point for exploring the Great Barrier Reef and inland Far North Queensland. From here you have access to liveaboard cruises, day cruises, and tours of the Daintree Rainforest and the wilder Cape York Peninsula.

While you can go to the Great Barrier Reef in a day from Cairns, it generally only allows you to reach the inner reef, and it is widely said that the best-preserved corals and best marine life lie on the outer reef.

Near Cairns drive (or transfer) to the scenic railway to Kuranda, a village hidden in the mountainous rainforest. Get there via a rickety (but totally safe) wooden train, with stunning views over Barron Gorge and various waterfalls. You can then take the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway back to your car or transfer station.
