The history of Dunedin commenced in the 1860s because of the gold rush. Many of today’s buildings date back to this period, resulting in Victorian and Edwardian influences everywhere you go in Dunedin.

Dunedin Railway Station houses the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame and the starting point for the Taieri Gorge Railway. Other places of interest include Olveston Historic Home, St Paul’s Cathedral, and the Municipal Chambers.

Dunedin has two New Zealand Gardens Trust gardens of international significance. Dunedin Botanic Gardens and Larnach Castle; and four gardens of national importance. Dunedin Chinese Garden, Glenfalloch Woodland Garden, Olveston Historic Home and Wylde Willow Garden. All six gardens are truly magnificent and well worth a visit. Each year in November, Dunedin has a Rhododendron Festival.
