This is a fly fishing and wilderness experience you will never forget. RiverFly can offer anglers a unique opportunity to fish Tasmania’s Western Lakes. Join us for an all-inclusive three day/2 night experience. We’ll drive 1.5 hours south of Launceston to the northern end of the Tasmanian Wilderness Heritage area. Then we hike for 40 minutes up to Skullbone Plains.

Spanning an area of 40 kilometres by 20 kilometres, the Western Lakes has few comparisons globally. Also known as the Land of 3000 Lakes, the region averages 1000 metres and features varied terrain from alpine to temperate rainforest. Wild brown trout dominate the fishery, with an average size of 2 1/2lbs (18 inches). The largest trout caught in recent years was estimated at 17lbs. The challenging fly fishing is dominated by lake-edge sight fishing and wade-polaroiding in shallow and crystal clear waters. Dry flies are the norm. The only other comparison to this style of fly fishing is flats-fishing for bonefish. Lake-shallows are scanned for cruising browns targeted with a quick presentation, and the rest is up to the trout and angler. The focus of the guides is on maximising sight-fishing and dry fly fishing opportunities, and the rest is up to the trout and angler.

RiverFly’s Western Lakes Huts are located on the iconic conservation property, Skullbone Plains (25 kilometres west of Bronte Park), and share a 16 kilometre boundary with the UNESCO listed World Heritage Area. Just 200 meters away from the huts, through forest and alpine heath, sits the snowgum-lined beaches of Lake Ina, the Walls of Jerusalem National Park, and the greater Western Lakes wild trout fishery. The unique combination of location and sight-fishing opportunities make RiverFly Wilderness Huts one of the most exciting guided fly fishing initiatives in recent history.

‘Simple, private and sustainable’ is how we describe our new hut-based wilderness camp, the only camp of its type to offer direct access to the famed Tasmanian Western Lakes.

Opened in December 2012, the huts themselves are simple, modern & lightweight structures, constructed with insulated walls, canvas roofs and ceilings, and wrap-around decks, all perched above the native flora on raised platforms. Ninety percent of the materials used were manufactured in Australia, and the huts were built to strict environmental impact-minimisation principles.

While visiting RiverFly Western Lakes Huts you may see up to a dozen rare species of flora and fauna, some of which exist nowhere else on earth. Iconic Tasmanian animals such as wallabies, wombats, owls and eagles are very common, with quolls and Tasmanian devils also endemic. As a backdrop to the camp, a snow-capped Mount Olympus, the heath of Skullbone Plains, and the gravel-sand beaches of Lake Ina create an inspiring alpine setting. RiverFly Wilderness Huts are privileged to be the only operator licenced by Parks and Wildlife to operate guided fly fishing trips in the adjacent Walls of Jerusalem National Park.

Located approximately 2.5km’s hike from the end of the road, our camp consists of three accommodation huts (sleeping a maximum two persons per hut), along with a communal hut, discreetly located on the edge of an un-touched forest and moorland. Just 250 metres away (as the crow flies) is the beautiful Lake Ina and the Walls of Jerusalem National Park & World Heritage Area. Each days involves sight fishing, and bushwalking (without packs).
