Nestled amongst the magnificent sandstone cliffs of the Carnarvon Ranges, Wallaroo is a 72, 000 acre cattle property owned by your hosts, Pauline and Justin MacDonnell, found approximately 160km north of Roma, towards the iconic Carnarvon Gorge.
Wallaroo Outback Retreat is an atmospheric lodge built from timber milled on the property. It has a fully equipped kitchen with all the cooking and serving equipment you could ever need as well as six individual bathrooms. Scattered behind the Retreat are ten fabulous glamping tents. Wake up amongst the towering Eucalypts listening to the magical sounds of the bush in crisp white linen on real posturepedic beds. This is camping at its best! Enjoy a yarn, a glass of wine and some camp oven cooking around the rustic fire pit while spotting for rock wallabies against the cliffs.

When is it best to visit? – Autumn and Spring. March, April, May and even early June are definitely the nicest times of year to visit Wallaroo Outback Retreat as well as August, September, October and early November. The Retreat is closed throughout the height of Summer. For those checking in during Winter please be aware that it does get quite chilly here. A warm coat for around the fire is a must. Hot water bottles are available for those who would like to use them. The days though are glorious in the cooler months and can even get quite warm.
The nearest town is Injune, a 50 minute drive to the South and has a Spar, chemist, doctor, pub, tyre repair shop and more – much of which is closed over the weekend though.
The internet is available at the Retreat although it is strongly recommend you put away your devices for the duration of your stay. Enjoy the tranquility! It rather spoils the atmosphere around the campfire when guests are face timing friends who couldn’t join them.
